Tech Lead for the Platform Domain

Berlingske Media
Closed recruitment
City København K
Region Hovedstaden
Organisation Berlingske Media

Berlingske Media started as a small newspaper 275 years ago and is today the country’s largest digital media house. Combined, readers turn more pages across the company’s five media brands (Berlingske, B.T., Weekendavisen, Euroinvestor, and 24syv) than at its competitors. Berlingske Media works constantly to ensure that readers get relevant, engaging editorial and commercial content across all its media, fulfilling its role as a free and responsible press.

As Tech Lead, you will become part of the Platform Domain, which consists of three development teams. The domain’s three product managers, a business analyst, and a UX designer are based in Copenhagen, while the rest of the team is based in Poland.

You will be attached to one team (the CORE team) as tech lead, but you will also be expected to participate in technical discussions across the rest of the domain when needed. In addition to your important daily work within the team, you will also act as a sparring partner for the team’s product manager, particularly on the development of the new frontend platform for all of Berlingske Media’s news sites.

The role
You will lead Berlingske Media’s important work to develop a flexible, reliable, and scalable platform for its four sites. The platform must support the journalistic workflow with simple, intuitive tools and a CMS for efficient publishing of text, audio, and video. In addition, the platform must help make B.T., Berlingske, Weekendavisen, and Euroinvestor the fastest websites in Denmark. To achieve this, the current platform, which is written in PHP, must be rewritten to Node.js on the backend and React on the frontend.

As Tech Lead, you will play a central role in this transformation and in executing a visionary technology roadmap. The development is not just about rewriting the platform but also about making the right technical choices. You will therefore help drive technical discussions on the architecture and ask the right questions to raise the bar even further for Berlingske Media’s future platform. This work will also involve close collaboration with the consulting firm Appear, which has been hired to kick-start the new frontend platform.

In your role, you will also work together with the product manager to build a development team in Denmark. You will have the opportunity to take part in the hiring process and act as a mentor and sparring partner within a hybrid team. You will set the overall direction for the development work and maintain oversight of the team. You will continue to be hands-on in the development process and take responsibility for the architecture and releases.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive and take ownership of the team’s solutions
  • Engage in and take the initiative for technical discussions across IT and with the consulting firm
  • Be responsible for the transformation from PHP to React/Node.js within the platform team
  • Set the overall direction for development and maintain oversight
  • Contribute as a mentor for a hybrid team based in both Poland and Denmark

Requirements

Your educational background is not decisive. What matters most is that you have the necessary professional experience and the right mindset when it comes to agile development and collaboration. Motivation is also weighted highly.

In terms of your professional experience, it is important that you have:

  • Solid experience with Node.js and React
  • Experience working with multiple different stakeholders and a desire for cross-functional responsibility
  • Experience with a similar transformation or rebuild

In addition, you are expected to be good at collaborating and to have strong communication skills. Berlingske also likes to see that you are purpose-driven and enjoy working toward a shared goal. You will furthermore become part of a department driven by the principles of product led digital development.
